FREY Environmental, Inc. completed a challenging subsurface remediation project at an actively operating Site, ultimately achieving regulatory closure following approximately two years of remediation activities. Previous subsurface investigations identified predominantly fine-grained materials beneath the Site, including clayey and sandy silt from near ground surface to approximately 8 feet below ground surface (bgs), followed by silty, poorly graded fine- to medium-grained sand extending to approximately 13 feet bgs. A clay layer was encountered from approximately 13 to 30 feet bgs. These very fine-grained subsurface conditions presented significant challenges for remediation. To address the Site conditions, FREY implemented high-vacuum dual-phase extraction (HVDPE) over a period of approximately two years. The remediation approach was successfully completed despite the difficult silty and clayey subsurface materials. A key aspect of the project was FREY’s ability to perform the remediation while the Site remained fully operational. All remediation activities were completed without requiring the business to close or cease operations, minimizing disruption to the Site and its occupants. Following completion of the remediation program, FREY successfully obtained regulatory closure for the Site. This project demonstrates FREY Environmental’s ability to manage and execute complex remediation projects from implementation through regulatory closure, including Sites with challenging subsurface conditions and active business operations.
